Secret Celebrity Summer Smart Beautiful Sexy Curves Bikini Body Diets (are self starvation)

  1. Here is the secret: Starvation Diets DO NOT WORK. Eat. If you are paying $50 a week for an Instagram model to send you a starvation diet and some bikini photos, then you can afford to see a qualified dietitian and buy some nutritious vegan food.
  2. Be the best You that you can be. Wanting the same shade of eyeshadow as a celebrity is one thing, wanting their eye colour and hating yours because they’re different, is another thing.
  3. Be patient, no matter how long it took you to get the shape, health you have now, a 12-week, 1200-calorie starvation plan might transform your body for summer, but afterwards, the damage to your health, happiness and metabolism is going to take a lot longer than 12 weeks to recover from.
  4. Get informed, be smart and keep an open mind, but sceptical of what you read, see, hear, watch especially if someone is trying to sell you something. Get educated, get a second source, preferably backed up scientifically. If you have done all the research, got information from a qualified source, and still think something is right for you, do the experiment, and if it doesn’t work for you, then it isn’t right for you.
  5. Beauty comes from the inside out, not the outside in. Beauty products that test on animals are not beautiful. An eating plan that is full of dead and tortured animals can never nourish a beautiful body. No matter what image is presented in magazines and Instagram, if you are eating cruelty, using animal tested cosmetics or wearing dead animals, you are not beautiful inside.
  6. Fuck the thigh gap! Seriously, fuck it. It is an arbitrary measurement of your commitment to starvation – unless that is your natural body shape, then good for you. Sexy is your natural body shape, sexy is confidence and happiness, sexy is eating when you are hungry. Starvation is not sexy.
  7. Curves are nothing to be ashamed of, if that is your natural body shape. Some people are naturally leaner and that is also nothing to be ashamed of. Starving on 1200 or 1500 calorie a day diets will destroy your natural shape.
  8. What is better than being miserable on a starvation diet to get a “bikini body”? apart from Everything! Being happy with who you are and putting a bikini on your body, if that is your hearts desire. If you wear a bikini, you have a bikini body, regardless of what the magazines and social media models says.
  9. We only get one body, and if we are lucky we will be living in it for a very long time, look after it, nourish it, love it, treat it well and live to a healthy old age.
  10. Starvation diets do not work.

The Second Tsunami: Disaster Capitalism in Japan

When the pursuit of profits takes preference over life

“Second Tsunami” is a phrase used by Naomi Klein in her book The Shock Doctrine: The Rise Of Disaster Capitalism to describe the gleeful way the hyper capitalists reacted after the Tsunami of 2004.

When the water has washed everything away, when the earth has shaken all the buildings to the ground, those with money move in and Vulture Capitalists use the disaster to promote their own capitalist ideological agenda.

Naomi Klein, says here, in this interview with Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!, hyper-capitalists are very good at taking advantage of the shock a population experiences following disasters – “Remaking people, shocking them into obedience . . . these techniques don’t only work on individuals; they can work on whole societies: a collective trauma, a war, a coup, a natural disaster, a terrorist attack puts us all into a state of shock. And in the aftermath, like the prisoner in the interrogation chamber, we, too, become childlike, more inclined to follow leaders who claim to protect us.”

Because when hyper-capitalists see an opportunity to make money, nothing will stand in their way, not the plants, animals, clean air, clean water – it seems as if all life on earth becomes expendable.

How many safety corners were cut by a nuclear industry trying to save money and increase profits?

How many workers will lose their lives going into a nuclear power plant on the verge of a melt down, because they need the wages?

How many people and animals will die from radiation while the people that profited from these nuclear power plants live it in some 5-star beach resort, far away from the deadly radiation?

As happens daily under capitalism, profits are put before people. Making nuclear plants designed to withstand a worst case scenario and protecting the surrounding population is deemed too costly by the profit driven system..”

How capitalism made Japan’s disaster worse

The hearts of workers and the oppressed of the world go out to the Japanese people who have been hit by an earthquake and tsunami and are now threatened with nuclear disaster. We can never forget that more than 200,000 people, almost all civilians, were murdered by U.S. nuclear bombs dropped on Japan in 1945, while millions suffered from radiation poisoning, cancer and birth defects in the following decades.

But the hearts of the Japanese and U.S. capitalist governments, investment bankers and corporate plunderers are stone cold to the suffering of the people.

The quake and tsunami may have killed 30,000 people. Whole villages have been destroyed. Factories, stores, water, food supplies, homes, electricity, heating facilities for the cold north, the fishing industry and animal herds were demolished. Millions are suffering still. Food and water supplies are contaminated in a 100-mile radius.

Vital information about the nuclear threat is being withheld. The Japanese and U.S. capitalist governments, Tokyo Electric Power and General Electric, which built the affected plants, the International Atomic Energy Agency – all are tied to the profit-driven oil, gas, coal and nuclear energy industries and cannot be trusted.

The greatest threat arises from lack of water to cool 1,100 spent fuel rods, which emit deadly cesium and plutonium if ignited. A Tokyo Eletric {sic} Power executive admitted that the company delayed pumping sea water in, fearing it would ruin a valuable investment.

Since 1972 nuclear power experts have condemned the GE-designed plants for not venting hydrogen gas — which caused the explosions — and for unsafe storage of spent fuel rods. Tokyo Electric Power has been cited for numerous uncorrected safety violations.

While the imperialists on the United Nations Security Council rushed to get a resolution allowing them to wage war on Libya, the International Atomic Energy Agency, dominated by these same powers, said they’ll send some experts in a few days — a week after the crisis.

The Japanese government has told people in the area of the nuclear reactors to move 10 miles away. Yet all the corporate executives have been told to relocate at least 50 miles away. Most have fled to luxury hotels in Tokyo. Massive government-sponsored airlifts have been provided to evacuate corporate bloodsuckers from Japan, while working people freeze and go hungry.

The perilous job of racing to stop a nuclear catastrophe is being heroically and selflessly carried out by a small group of workers. The amount of radiation levels they can “safely” absorb is constantly raised by those sitting at a safe distance.

While adults and children were dying, the first “emergency” measure taken by the Japanese government was to dump almost half a trillion dollars into the stock market to prevent a crash.

The G7 countries held an emergency meeting March 19 attended by U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke. They discussed their fear that the global capitalist crisis was deepened by this tragedy.

They each pledged to put money from their central banks — the working class’ money – into propping up currencies. Did they take up relieving the largest rise in food prices in 36 years? Did they discuss the fate of the Japanese people, or the planet? No, their concern was how to shore up the currency markets.

The central banks are rushing in to buy up government bonds to keep their interest returns high as countries sell them. They stated that the unfolding disaster sent a shudder through world markets as investors sought the safe haven of government debt. That will mean more interest payments as banks loot the treasuries.

How to make a profit from this tragedy was the order of the day. Warren Buffet, the third-richest man in the world, said, “Frequently, something out of the blue … really creates a buying opportunity [for shares in Japanese companies]. I have seen that happen in the U.S. I have seen that happen around the world, I don’t think Japan will be an exception.” (Reuters, March 21)

The Chicago Board of Trade soared 46 percent on currency speculation. An investment banker said, “It’s a great environment out there.”

Other “emergency” actions were taken by companies like Hewlett Packard, which set up a Pentagon-styled, 24-hour “situation room” to monitor where it would get parts due to closed Japan factories, so the process of making profits could go on. Most commodities these days are a product of global labor, but end up in the hands of private capitalist corporations.

U.S. gov’t backs nuclear industry

Military corporations, banks and energy industries, especially big oil, are the real powers behind the capitalist state. GE designed the Japanese plants and GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt is a close consultant to President Barack Obama, who bizarrely named him to be his “jobs czar.” In November, Obama went to India with Immelt and 200 other executives. They forced and bribed the Indian government to pass legislation exempting GE from liability for nuclear accidents.

Countries everywhere were forced to turn to nuclear energy because of the U.S. monopolization of the oil industry. While we have an urgent, global need for safe, sustainable energy, saving the people and the planet plays no role in the decisions of Wall Street and the capitalist governments.

Our labor comes together around the globe, but the product of that labor is stolen by the private capitalist owners. We need a global public takeover from private industry of all energy resources and the creation of committees from the masses to oversee and create new sources and dismantle what is
dangerous.

Sam Marcy, the late chairperson of Workers World Party, wrote in 1990:
“At this critical phase in world history, it is only the deliberate activity of the masses themselves, when they intervene and threaten the system of capitalist exploitation and oppression, that can sweep away the polluters like the hazardous waste they created on this planet.” (Workers World, April 26, 1990)

Only a planned, socialist system, based on need, not greed, and global cooperation of the working class and oppressed can save the planet and free human beings from hunger, war, poverty and environmental destruction.

We stand with the working class and oppressed of Japan and demand that GE, Tokyo Electric and the governments that back them be held liable and that immediate and emergency aid be provided to all those suffering in Japan.

Sweet Easy Vegan Cupcakes recipe

Based on Classic Cupcakes, with a Maple Twist! by The Tasty Vegan

This is my version of that recipe:

INGREDIENTS
275g white flour, self raising
150g brown sugar – char-free
1-1.5C shredded / desiccated coconut

125ml oil of your choice (eg sunflower, macadamia)
100ml milk of your choice (eg almond, rice)

2tbl golden syrup



INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 160°C fan-forced (= 180°C not fan-forced = 320°F)

Mix the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, coconut) in a large bowl.

Mix the wet ingredients, add to dry ingredients.

Add the golden syrup.

Stir til all ingredients mixed well.

Pour into paper-lined cupcake or muffin trays.

Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown, or until a wooden toothpick comes out cleanly when inserted.

The Tasty Vegan says DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN – It’s a crime against cupcakes, my oven is fan-forced, so I spin the cupcakes tray around half way through the cooking time, so they cook evenly.


Icing / frosting optional, they are sweet enough as it is.



These are moist, and don’t rise too much. Can be stored in the fridge – they will go cold, but unlike egg/dairy cakes which go stale, they maintain their freshness in the fridge.

Cheese: The Other White Meat (why cheese eaters are problematic for vegans)

If you are a vegetarian, and would like to be vegan, my question for you is… what are you waiting for?

Vegetarians know the reality of where there food comes from – or rather WHO their food use to be, and it does not seem to bother them.

A lot of vegans, probably have at some point meet someone who says that they are “almost vegan” or “90% vegan – except for cheese”, or,

They may say something like – “oh I could Never be vegan, I love cheese too much” or maybe they do actually call themselves Vegan, yet has an occasional slip up, if they are at a party, and someone offers them some cheese, then they might “cheat” on their vegan diet

I met a “vegan” recently, who lectured me about how I was a “fake vegan” because I didn’t hate on ALF – animal liberation front – yet, this same person didn’t know that their morning protein shake made with whey wasn’t actually vegan.

Oh how I laughed!

Dairy is not benign, dairy involves huge amounts of cruelty and exploitation and DEATH.

And then these cheese-eaters pat themselves on the back, thinking that Vegan is just a different form of Vegetarian. I mean, we all love animals, right? It’s not like the animal has to DIE or anything, right?

Oh, but I never buy cheese myself! they protest. If someone offers it to me, or there is a pizza, or I’m hungry, or [insert excuse here]. That would be like someone saying “oh but I don’t smoke, I never buy cigarettes myself, I mean, if someone offers me one, or I get them off a friend when I’m at the pub after a late night, but, no, I’m not a smoker or anything”.

How is this any different? Just because you don’t buy it, does that mean it stops being cheese?

Here is my opinion… You know those old sayings “Milk – is liquid Meat” or “There is veal floating invisibly in every bottle of milk” or “Meat is murder, milk is rape” … vegans (by that I mean actual vegans, not faux cheeseatarian vegans) chose to not consume dairy in all its forms, because…

nothing could taste so good that it justifies rape and torture and slavery and murder.




That is what it comes down to:

If you consume dairy this is what you support

This PeTA video, shows the reality of the Land O’ Lakes dairy factory in Pennsylvania USA.

This is not an exception.



And don’t kid yourself – if you consume dairy products, and you haven’t personally met the cow, there is a very good chance that what you are eating came from cows just like this portrayed in the video.

And just why is that cow generously giving us her milk? Well she isn’t. Milk is meant for baby cows… it is baby food, for HER babies.

Like any mammal, she produces milk only to feed her babies.

Which means, she is forced to become pregnant against her will in order to create the baby that will get her body producing the milk.

And if people are stealing her milk (the cow doesn’t GIVE away anything), then there are babies out there, that are not drinking it.

So, what happens to those baby cows, which are surplus to requirements – if they survive the high infant mortality rate, they get sold into slavery, and become either milk cows or veal calves or pet food.

Pet food? Seriously, imagine telling that to a baby – your life is nothing, you are worth more to me dead.

or, Some may be shipped off to cosmetics companies to be turned into face creams or diet pills, because in some markets, it is illegal to use cows that are older than 30-months old in order to reduce the risk of spreading Mad Cow Disease (BSE – bovine spongiform encephalopathy).

Beauty products that are stuffed full with animal products are not beautiful. Nope, I do not want to be slapping dead calf on my face.

And this is a side effect of societies cheese-addiction.

Not much of a life, is it?

Then, what happens when the dairy cow gets too old?

After years of slavery, of being treated like a machine….

Cows that have been bred for maximum milk production, are unable to sustain the weight of their udders, which may be infected with mastitis, then what?

Is there a pension plan, and she goes off to a farm in the country to wander the hills and pastures and frolic in the clover… hell no, if she survives a couple of years of relentless torture in the dairy factory, she is shipped off to slaughter as soon as the milk production begins to slow up.

Thanks for the all milk, my dear, and don’t let the barn door hit you on the way out.




And then there is RENNET
Unless the label states “non animal rennet” – that cheese the vegan is eating, it isn’t even vegetarian.

Rennet is an enzyme used in cheese making, that is naturally present in the stomach of calves in order to digest the milk they are drinking.

Animal Rennet is taken from the lining of calves stomachs, and is often a by-product of the veal industry.

So when Vegetarians justify their continued animal consumption because “the animal doesn’t have to die”, What exactly do they mean? The baby cows that don’t survive to adulthood, the veal calves, the petfood calves or the cosmetics calves, the sick and dying milk cows, the retired cows who are sent to slaughter at 4 or 5 years old instead of well into their 20s which is the natural life expectancy of a cow.

Yummy.

This isn’t even going to go near the substances actually in the milk – pus, blood, leukemia cells, bovine growth hormone, anti-biotics, pesticides, herbicides, possibility of BSE prions, excessive amounts of protein and lots and lots of saturated fat.

Cheese eaters – what is the difference between that and eating meat for all the misery the production of milk entails.



And don’t get me started on vegans who eat HONEY……

After last weeks 15 minute outrage regarding Alicia Silverstone Is She / Isn’t She Vegan (see post: what do you call a cheese-eating vegan?… a celebrity) comes this little blog post that had the twitterverse a-tweeting.

Vegan No More

The former “Voracious Vegan” is now just “Voracious” (which according to Webster’s dictionary, is a synonym for “greedy, rapacious”.

After 3/1/2 years on a vegan diet, Tasha eats meat and is “moaning with pleasure and joy” (hence the title of my post).

The only appropriate response to this publicity fuelled confession, from Tasha, is ignore it until it goes away. But the online vegan community is small, we like to laugh at the ridiculousness.

My first bite of meat after 3.5 years of veganism was both the hardest and easiest thing I’ve ever done. Tears ran down my face as saliva pooled in my mouth. The world receded to a blank nothingness and I just ate, and ate, and ate. I cried in grief and anger, while moaning with pleasure and joy.

She eats one steak, and instantly her health is miraculously returned (quote: I had only eaten a small piece of cow flesh, and yet I felt totally full, but light and refreshed all at once) Hallelujah! Praise Jesus! Praise Buddha! Praise Allah! Praise Deity Of Your Choice…. Let’s get real

Oh my, tears are running down my face right now, from laughing so hard. I am almost literally rolling on the floor laughing. People in the cafe I am writing this from are looking at me, I haven’t laughed like this for a long time. Is this Tasha woman serious?

What kind of nutritional deficiencies are cured in an instant? Does this sound accurate to anyone?

Here is another, less funny, extract:

I delicately broached the topic of my ill-health with several vegan friends. I even made comments on other blogs and on twitter highlighting my struggles. The response was nothing short of shocking. In the span of just a few days I received an outpouring of emails from fellow ‘vegan’ bloggers, who told me in confidence that they weren’t really vegan ‘behind the scenes’. They ate eggs, or the occasional fish, or piece of meat, all to keep themselves healthy, but were too scared to admit to it on their blogs. I even received emails from two very prominent and well respected members of the vegan AR community. One a published and much loved vegan cook book author, the other a noted animal rights blogger, their emails detailed their health struggles and eventual unpublicized return to eating meat.
Vegan No More

She makes a few delicate comments and true celebrities vegans are pouring their inner most secrets out in an email? Does this sound logical to anyone?

People who make their living based on their vegan reputation would risk it all by confessing in an email to someone who is now clearly anti vegan (her quote: “I can no longer think it is wrong to eat animals” shows where her beliefs are).

And if this is true (IF!) name them. Go on, name names. Do not go around making baseless accusations, by throwing around these allegations, everyone is under suspicion.

Maybe that is what she wants. It’s a cheap shot, and I prefer to not believe her.

I do not want to go around suspecting everyone I read to be a pseudo-vegan. That is a Stalinist tactic that does nothing to foster cohesion and a sense of community, in what is otherwise a fragmented and fractious group.

Tasha has now giving up veganism, whatever that meant to her (it sounds like it was purely about diet), and has turned into a “feminist”…….. (Oh feminists – may the goddesses have mercy on your souls that this woman is speaking for you, how long before she decides she is really a patriarch and move on to the next cause de jour)

But on this, the abolitionists, the liberationists and the unaligned, all agree – hahaha, (hint: Tasha, we are laughing at you, not with you).

Vegan No More is great for a laugh, so is the responses, the blog posts, the gossip, the comments. I haven’t seen the vegan community so united in, well – ever!

The whole thing is a gift to the vegan community online, for once we could put aside our petty differences over which we fight so viciously, and get a great laugh at this nonsense, this completely laughably ludicrous self-serving, rambling, incoherent piece of anti-vegan propaganda.



And, while there are so many other things I would say, but I won’t, because I’m not a mean person. Instead, I’ll leave the talking to others. All these articles are well-worth following the links, and reading the original articles, and comments:

If you seriously believe vegans want to kill you, blogging about it doesn’t really convey that seriousness.]

Why B12 can be important for Vegans (my story)


This does not apply to all vegans, but is my personal story of what happens why B12 levels become critical.

I assume that I am no different to most vegans, in that I read about nutrition and food widely. I think vegans probably read more books about food than most other people.

So I knew that B12 (cobalamin) of all the vitamins and minerals was the most important one, being sourced via animal products.

It is produced by bacteria – so if it is found in plant food, it is in foods such as mushrooms which may have come in contact with dirt, or if it is found in animal products it is still the result of bacteria production.

Which is why, unless vegans pay attention, it can be overlooked.

There is a common idea on vegan websites and books, that there is enough B12 in the body to last five years or so, so when someone first goes vegan there is enough still in their system to last.

Last year, several things happened to me all at once, I got a really bad case of flu, and was not eating, this came after several weeks of dental treatment, where I hadn’t eaten, which came after a personal thing, in which I’d lost my enjoyment of food.

As a result, my weight had dropped by almost 10 kilos. My diet was shocking, I knew there was chance I would be low in some nutrients.

But I had begun to get strange symptoms.

My feet had started to get permanent pins-and-needles, then my hands. And then what was really scary, my memory was being affected.

Several instances stand out:
I was with a group of friends discussion how long we had known each other. I looked at one of my closet friends who I met in 2000 and the word that formed in my mind was 1990, when I spoke it, it came out as “1900”. No, that’s wrong, I mean 1990. My friend wasn’t born til 1991, so I wrote on a piece of paper 2000, which my hand wrote as 1880.

Another, I was with the same friends, trying to find something on a map, I pointed to the red section, the word that formed in my brain was “orange” even though I knew it was red, I told myself “it’s red” but again the word “orange” took the place of red. And as I spoke, the words that came out of my mouth were “I think it’s that purple section”
… So not only did I know that it was red as a colour, yet the letters in my mind were “orange”, my mouth said purple.

I was losing my nouns. I couldn’t remember the names of things, even though I could describe them.

I couldn’t remember the world “Cucumber”, and I was trying to describe it to my dining companion, “it’s long, and round, and hard…” (no, I am not flirting with you) “it’s cold, you eat it in salad, it had a dark green skin…”

It was time for action, this wasn’t a hold over of my flu or dental work.

I have occasional blood tests as part of my job, so during one routine blood test, I asked for my Iron and B12 to be also checked. We discussed my dental work, the flu I’d had and my lose of appetite, so I expected some of my readings to be a little low.

When the results came back, my doctor said my B12 was fine, but my iron was low.

I’d read in several places that low iron can mask a B12 deficiency, so while I expected my iron to be low, but Not out of range, I really thought my B12 would be low too.

I knew these results had to be wrong.

I occasionally take a vitamin supplement that has a B12 component, and I read the instructions: Take 2 every day with food.

I probably would have been taking not even 2 a week. But I made sure I took the recommended dosage.

And within a week and half, or so, the numbness in my hands and feet went, my memory returned. I don’t know that it was B12 deficiency, but I really, sincerely believe that it was. I don’t believe the blood tests told the wole story.

There are four foods I consume regularly that are fortified with B12, and I try to eat them often. And I try to get motivated to take vitamin supplements.

And if anyone wants to say, “but that just shows the inadequacies of being vegan”, take a look around your kitchen/bathroom, at how many pills and medications you take. I only take B12 occasionally, and that is it, that is all.

What happened to me was not just because I am vegan, it happened because there were 3 things in my life at the same time, that occurred one after the other, which meant I was barely eating…

and even having barely eaten in the 6 weeks or so before the medical tests, I still had an Iron level that was in the normal range (allbeit, the low end of normal)… and of all the people I know who have ever been prescribed iron tablets, they have been meat eaters, so I got a smile out of that result.

This is not medical advice, this is my personal story, I don’t blame it on being vegan, I chalk it down to being a young woman, who sometimes has changing life circumstances.

Being vegan is not hard, being a person is.

Ok, so you’re vegan – but do you eat people?


Food additives can refer to a lot of things – flavours, colours, emulsifiers, preservatives… these can be known by their chemical name or their E-number.

For example – E120 is cochineal, E901 is beeswax, E621 is MSG (for a full list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_number), and vegans get into the habit of scanning food labels to find those additives that are animal derived.

However, there is one additive that is derived from humans, E920 (L-Cysteine) which is produced from human hair.

E920 is an amino acid and is used as an improving agent in flour-based products.

It is used as a ‘dough improver’ or ‘bread improver’. The L-Cysteine is added to the ingredients during the mixing process prior to baking. During mixing, it reacts with a protein in wheat. As the original L-Cysteine amino acid is not present in the final product, by law there is no requirement to list it as an ingredient.

It is also used in the manufacture of cigarettes, as well as the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries (one of its names is Keratin)

Traditionally L-Cysteine has been sourced from feathers, pig bristles, but one of the richest sources is Human Hair.

And China, has an entire industry devoted to producing L-Cysteine from human hair.

The amino acid is extracted from the hair and feathers using a fermentation process involving a mutant strain of Escherichia coli (E.coli).

So while VEGANs are very conscious about avoid animal products, the manufacturing industries continue to find new ways to put animal derived ingredients in products, and now, there are human-byproducts to be aware of.

Mango Smoothie (vegan recipes)


What do vegans eat? That is a question that vegans hear frequently, as non-vegans puzzle over what vegans actually do eat. The answer is – vegans eat everything… except animal products.

Mango Smoothie

1 ripe mango, frozen
1 ripe banana, frozen
1 cup rice- or soy-milk (or other plant milk)

Place all ingredients in a blender, blend until thick and creamy.
If the blender cannot break up the frozen fruit, use partially frozen fruit.

Below are some ideas for alternatives.

Suggested options:

*add fresh pineapple

*add 1 cup fresh or frozen berries

*replace some / all of the milk with coconut water

*add a tablespoon flax oil (store flax oil in refrigerator)

*add juice and seeds of one passionfruit, after blending

*add lime juice

*add a tablespoon of hemp or flax seeds before blending


Yes, vegan refers to the whole lifestyle, not just food. Todays post is about food. Not veganism.

Vegan Disaster Planning (plus food ideas)

There have been some disasters and emergency situations in the media recently, between the earthquakes in New Zealand and floods in Victoria, Australia, as well as around the world, bushfires in Russia and floods in Pakistan, that have inundated much of that country, and before that earthquake in Haiti, storms in the Gulf coast of America… I thought I would look at the Disaster planning, especially in terms of being vegan.

Having been evacuated twice in recent years during bushfires, this is every day reality, and not build-a-bunker, form-a-militia survivalism, just things to consider during emergencies. Also useful information for road-trips, camping, and electricity black-outs.

And, one more useful (non-vegan) tip, if you are evacuated – take the door keys so you can get back in.

While much of the information covered by the standard “disaster kits” can apply equally to vegans or omnivores, there are some things to consider for vegans, apart from all the information listed in the official guides

work gloves: especially if for work outside the house, such as clearing fallen trees, or home repairs, suggestions are often for “leather gloves”

first aid kits: may contain OTC (over the counter) medications and treatments that have been tested on animals or from companies that test on animals

blankets: may be woolen blankets, prepare with non-wool alternatives

fishing kits: often a staple of disaster kits are useless in a vegan emergency

candles and matches: some candles are made out of tallow and matches are made from animal products

personal care and hygiene products: may contain animal products, be tested on animals, or come from companies that test on animals

animals: food, water, medication, all animals need a carrier, shelters may not take animals (when moving animals in a vehicle the key points to remember are keep them warm, dark and quiet)

flash drive, computer back-up: vegans that own blogs or social network sites, be prepared to hand over to someone else, and store your graphics and files that may have taken many years to collect. Include copies of log ins that might be saved on a computer or have auto-log in. Store in a water-proof container.

  • Canned fruit in juice, that can be eaten in one meal, there might not be options for storing left overs, and juice provides extra fluid
  • Canned beans
  • Grain/dried fruit bars (such as muesli or power bars) are now available with vegan selections

  • plained Rolled oats or Muesli mix, made with fruit and nuts; does not require cooking, add long-life soy milk
  • Crackers, Corn chips or crisps chips, extra salt may make require extra water
  • Canned corn, Canned baby potatoes or other Vegetables
  • Canned spaghetti, check for ingredients
  • UHT (ultra heat treated, long life) soy milk, plain or flavoured
  • Peanut butter, nut butter
  • Fruit jam, in small jars (short shelf life if unrefrigerated)
  • Vegan chocolate
  • Biscuits, Cookies
  • Seasonings, (jar or tin) powdered stock, pepper, chilli, soy sauce
  • Single serves mustard, chilli sauce, tomato sauce, peanut-butter (eg, find a friend in catering or hospitality industry)
  • Cocoa (pre mix with dry sweetener), Tea, Herbal Tea, Coffee
  • plus, Water
