Why B12 can be important for Vegans (my story)


This does not apply to all vegans, but is my personal story of what happens why B12 levels become critical.

I assume that I am no different to most vegans, in that I read about nutrition and food widely. I think vegans probably read more books about food than most other people.

So I knew that B12 (cobalamin) of all the vitamins and minerals was the most important one, being sourced via animal products.

It is produced by bacteria – so if it is found in plant food, it is in foods such as mushrooms which may have come in contact with dirt, or if it is found in animal products it is still the result of bacteria production.

Which is why, unless vegans pay attention, it can be overlooked.

There is a common idea on vegan websites and books, that there is enough B12 in the body to last five years or so, so when someone first goes vegan there is enough still in their system to last.

Last year, several things happened to me all at once, I got a really bad case of flu, and was not eating, this came after several weeks of dental treatment, where I hadn’t eaten, which came after a personal thing, in which I’d lost my enjoyment of food.

As a result, my weight had dropped by almost 10 kilos. My diet was shocking, I knew there was chance I would be low in some nutrients.

But I had begun to get strange symptoms.

My feet had started to get permanent pins-and-needles, then my hands. And then what was really scary, my memory was being affected.

Several instances stand out:
I was with a group of friends discussion how long we had known each other. I looked at one of my closet friends who I met in 2000 and the word that formed in my mind was 1990, when I spoke it, it came out as “1900”. No, that’s wrong, I mean 1990. My friend wasn’t born til 1991, so I wrote on a piece of paper 2000, which my hand wrote as 1880.

Another, I was with the same friends, trying to find something on a map, I pointed to the red section, the word that formed in my brain was “orange” even though I knew it was red, I told myself “it’s red” but again the word “orange” took the place of red. And as I spoke, the words that came out of my mouth were “I think it’s that purple section”
… So not only did I know that it was red as a colour, yet the letters in my mind were “orange”, my mouth said purple.

I was losing my nouns. I couldn’t remember the names of things, even though I could describe them.

I couldn’t remember the world “Cucumber”, and I was trying to describe it to my dining companion, “it’s long, and round, and hard…” (no, I am not flirting with you) “it’s cold, you eat it in salad, it had a dark green skin…”

It was time for action, this wasn’t a hold over of my flu or dental work.

I have occasional blood tests as part of my job, so during one routine blood test, I asked for my Iron and B12 to be also checked. We discussed my dental work, the flu I’d had and my lose of appetite, so I expected some of my readings to be a little low.

When the results came back, my doctor said my B12 was fine, but my iron was low.

I’d read in several places that low iron can mask a B12 deficiency, so while I expected my iron to be low, but Not out of range, I really thought my B12 would be low too.

I knew these results had to be wrong.

I occasionally take a vitamin supplement that has a B12 component, and I read the instructions: Take 2 every day with food.

I probably would have been taking not even 2 a week. But I made sure I took the recommended dosage.

And within a week and half, or so, the numbness in my hands and feet went, my memory returned. I don’t know that it was B12 deficiency, but I really, sincerely believe that it was. I don’t believe the blood tests told the wole story.

There are four foods I consume regularly that are fortified with B12, and I try to eat them often. And I try to get motivated to take vitamin supplements.

And if anyone wants to say, “but that just shows the inadequacies of being vegan”, take a look around your kitchen/bathroom, at how many pills and medications you take. I only take B12 occasionally, and that is it, that is all.

What happened to me was not just because I am vegan, it happened because there were 3 things in my life at the same time, that occurred one after the other, which meant I was barely eating…

and even having barely eaten in the 6 weeks or so before the medical tests, I still had an Iron level that was in the normal range (allbeit, the low end of normal)… and of all the people I know who have ever been prescribed iron tablets, they have been meat eaters, so I got a smile out of that result.

This is not medical advice, this is my personal story, I don’t blame it on being vegan, I chalk it down to being a young woman, who sometimes has changing life circumstances.

Being vegan is not hard, being a person is.

Why Palm Oil can be important for Vegans


Palm oil, derived from the fruit of the palm tree, is itself a vegan product, yet its use is contributing to the deaths of endangered orangutans and continued use may end up resulting in the extinction of the orangutan species.

Orangutans, native to Indonesia and Malaysia, and found in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo. This endangered species, shares 96.5% of our DNA, that makes them one of our closet relatives.

Yet, we humans are doing as much as we can to kill them by destroying their habitat.

One of the reasons, our use of palm oil. Rainforest the size of over-300 soccer fields is destroyed every hour to create land for palm oil plantations.

[Crude Palm Oil] is used mainly as an ingredient for food production (i.e. margarine, ice cream, biscuits, cooking oil etc). It also has a number of other non-food uses including greasing and softening agent in leather production and as an ingredient in the production of plasticisers, paint and surface coatings. PKO, however, is generally used for other non-food purposes such as soap making, detergents, cosmetics, ingredient for insecticides and fungicides, hydraulic brake fluids and other substances used in the electronics industry.

Mango Smoothie (vegan recipes)


What do vegans eat? That is a question that vegans hear frequently, as non-vegans puzzle over what vegans actually do eat. The answer is – vegans eat everything… except animal products.

Mango Smoothie

1 ripe mango, frozen
1 ripe banana, frozen
1 cup rice- or soy-milk (or other plant milk)

Place all ingredients in a blender, blend until thick and creamy.
If the blender cannot break up the frozen fruit, use partially frozen fruit.

Below are some ideas for alternatives.

Suggested options:

*add fresh pineapple

*add 1 cup fresh or frozen berries

*replace some / all of the milk with coconut water

*add a tablespoon flax oil (store flax oil in refrigerator)

*add juice and seeds of one passionfruit, after blending

*add lime juice

*add a tablespoon of hemp or flax seeds before blending


Yes, vegan refers to the whole lifestyle, not just food. Todays post is about food. Not veganism.

People who eat meat are entitled to know who their food used to be.

PETA, you are not the voice of Animal Rights (so stop talking)


PETA have always said and done things that get more attention for themselves rather than the animals they claim to support, however, the recent comments from the head of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk that Vegans “should be living in cave” show just how out of touch with mainstream animal rights PETA have become.

This is not just speaking a case of speaking out against a successful animal welfare organisation. My disagreement with PETA, is for several reasons: they don’t think being vegan is necessary to being an animal rights activist, they give awards to slaughterhouse designers, they take in shelter animals and then kill them, they chase celebrities rather than save animals, and think naked women (or “chicks” in PETA parlance) are powerful, this is all subsidised by tax payers and diverts money from no-kill shelters.

I will talk about these things, because I think it is important for people to know where their money goes when they donate to a charity or buy their merchandise. PETA might call themselves “People for Ethical Treatment of Animals” but they are nothing more than a welfare group.

While PETA-bashing is not new, there comes a time, when you say enough is enough. And this is why:

Firstly, they don’t think being vegan is important to them. I’m sorry, did I miss something? How can any organisation that claims to fight for animals, or at least give that impression, not support veganism. If you aren’t vegan, you don’t care about animals.

The goal for many {animal} activists is simply to get more people
to eat less meat. “Absolute purists should be living in a cave,” says Ingrid Newkirk,
president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
“Anybody who witnesses the suffering of animals and has a glimmer of hope
of reducing that suffering can’t take the position that it’s all or nothing.
We have to be pragmatic. Screw the principle.”

There are no hyphenated-vegans. There is no such thing as Ingrid thinks, as a purist-vegan. You are either a vegan OR you don’t care about animals. There is no such thing as a little bit of cruelty being acceptable, a little bit of rape being acceptable, a little bit of slaughter is acceptable.

It IS all or nothing. If you are Not a Vegan, you have given up your rights to speak on behalf of those whose body you consume, wear, or any other way use.

Ingrid is concerned about “misery” and “suffering” and “pain” or “anything like that” or “humane euthanasia” when her employees killed 31 animals.

Doesn’t that sound just like the how welfarists describe animals used for food, as long as they don’t suffer when you kill them, it is ok to kill and eat them.

This is not ethical.

Approximately 6 to 8 million animals are handled by animal shelters in the United States each year. Even though some are reclaimed or adopted, nearly 4 million unwanted dogs and cats are left with nowhere to go. Shelters cannot humanely house and support all these animals until their natural deaths—they would be forced to live in cramped cages or kennels for years, lonely and stressed, and other animals would have to be turned away because there would not be room for them.

Turning unwanted animals loose to roam the streets is not a humane option. If they don’t starve, freeze, get hit by a car, or die of disease, they may be tormented and possibly killed by cruel juveniles or picked up by dealers who obtain animals to sell to laboratories.

Good and Bad Solutions
Because of the high number of unwanted companion animals and the lack of good homes, sometimes the most humane thing that a shelter worker can do is give an animal a peaceful release from a world in which dogs and cats are often considered “surplus” and unwanted. PETA, The American Veterinary Medical Association, and The Humane Society of the United States concur that an intravenous injection of sodium pentobarbital administered by a trained professional is the kindest, most compassionate method of euthanizing animals. The American Humane Association considers this to be the only acceptable method of euthanasia for cats and dogs in animal shelters.

LIES. or Creative truth telling?

Many good shelters, struggle to get by on extremely limited funds, that do not kill animals brought in to them. But, housing animals in good conditions costs more money than PETA want to spend on animals, that they could be spending on celebrities instead.

PETA also gives awards to slaughter-house designers.

In 2004 PETA awarded Temple Grandin with a Proggy (progress) Award, as a Visionary. This is part of the reason they gave for awarding a slaughterhouse designer a PETA award:

Dr. Grandin consults with the livestock industry and the American Meat Institute on the design of slaughterhouses! However, Dr. Grandin’s improvements to animal-handling systems found in slaughterhouses have decreased the amount of fear and pain that animals experience in their final hours, and she is widely considered the world’s leading expert on the welfare of cattle and pigs.

Ingrid Newkirk describe this as “I admire her work in the field of humane animal slaughter.”

When you design a more efficient slaughterhouse, the result is animals are slaughtered more efficiently, which means more animals are killed. This does not sound “visionary” to anyone who believes in Animal Liberation.

But then, PETA do take in shelter animals… and kill them, so it is easy to understand how they could be confused between “slaughtering” and “saving”.

During all of 2009, PETA found adoptive homes for just eight pets. Just eight animals — out of the 2,366 it took in. PETA just broke its own record.

The PETA Kill Animals website also features PETA’s kill statistics from 1998 to 2009, and that figure works out to 299/300 animals are killed by PETA.

While no-kill shelters manage to get by on a fraction of the money PETA get, they do, and they do it without killing 299/300 animals brought in by people who think they are doing the right thing.

Although, as PETA themselves do point out, it is expensive providing a basic standard of care for “surplus” (their word) animals, money that could be better spend chasing celebrities.

As Vegina (the well-respected animal rights activist, Ms Glasser) points out in her blog post
playing to the paparazzi , concerning a circus protest,

A celebrity appearance was arranged for the protest. Activists were not told who was coming but it was requested we not do any chanting until she arrived because she was “sensitive to that sort of thing.”

PETA’s use of celebrities is getting in the way of real activists, doing real work.


UK model, Naomi Campbell appearing in this PETA ad, under the banner, “We’d rather go naked than wear fur”, only to turn up on the catwalk a couple of years later, for Dolce & Gabbana wearing a fur coat… Oops.

DITA Von Teese, burlesque dancer and PETA model, loves her fur, and refuses to give them up, despite her work with PETA:

Dita, who wore fox fur when she performed at the Macy’s Passport AIDS benefit last week, told People magazine: “PETA is totally aware of me wearing fur. I’m not working with PETA to tell people to be vegetarians or to stop wearing fur. I am there to strictly speak about spaying and neutering your pets.”

Jenna Jameson, PETA model for pleather, yet, kills fish, people see the behaviour of celebrities and it weakens PETAs message, unless their message is “do what we say, and not what we do”.


But then, chasing celebrities is what you do best.
PETA’s 30th Anniversary – Gala and Humanitarian Awards:

PETA’s star-studded, once-in-a-lifetime event will celebrate 30 years of cutting-edge campaigns that have brought about monumental change for animals and are leading to even more progress. This memorable night will feature a celebrity awards presentation, wonderful musical performances and other top-notch entertainment, delectable vegan food, unique silent auction items, and more in a historic and famous Hollywood setting.

Will Temple Grandin be in the running again, has she designed any other ways of efficiently slaughtering animals, that PETA feels she should be award for?

These celebrity fueled events have been described as “Each year it holds a celebrity gala … which is attended by thousands and makes for great PR.” – oh wait, sorry, oh, sorry, that was a description of Scientology.


A website set up, to discredit PETA, I am currently researching who is behind this (another major anti-PETA campaign is funded by CCF, Centre for Consumer Freedom, an organisation that represents the meat and dairy industries), has a PETA vice president quoted on the Fox News Channel’s audience: “Our campaigns are always geared towards children, and they always will be.”

Where have I heard that “targetting children” phrase before?… oh yes, the Tobacco Industry, in this court ruling, (TOBACCO INDUSTRY: UNLAWFUL, DECEPTIVE AND LETHAL: 2006: US District Court Judge Gladys Kessler’s damning judgment against the tobacco industry), the judge found that, yes, Big Tobacco does target children.

Get them young, and you have a convert for life?

How much of peoples hard-earned dollars are being wasted on this garbage of celebrity worship? Money that people donate a few dollars at time, thinking they are making a difference in the life-or-death of an animal? Would they be disappointed to find out money they slave hard for doing their 60hours a week gets diverted to throwing parties for the rich and famous.

PETA rakes in the money through donations, but do they spend any of it on animals, any, at all? But why spend money saving animals, when PETA could be out there making soft porn to sell vegetarianism?


Vegetarians? Did I miss something? Dairy, eggs, honey, are all vegetarian food products which inflict intolerable cruelty on the cows, chickens and bees involved.

I think you meant GO VEGAN, didn’t you?

PETA quote often uses naked women to promote vegetarianism. These ads and promotions are so ubiquitous, that I will not repeat any more of them here. They use naked women to promote tofu, circuses, fur coats, and many more causes. There isn’t an issue that PETA doesn’t promote using naked women.

But then, PETA’s agenda is never about VEGANISM, as Ingrid Newkirk herself has allegedly said (quoted on the website TMZ)

STK, a steakhouse restaurant in New York, features foie gras on the menu, menu as of today.

Although, what is more likely, they are promoting PETA, rather than anything to do with animals.

How about some more naked women to promote VEGANISM, and actually make a difference on behalf of animals?

If being naked was a sign of empowerment, why doesn’t President Obama turn up to the oval office in his underwear, and on the topic of empowerment – Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Senator Hillary Clinton, former Governor Sarah Palin and Oprah, these are powerful women, and I notice they often wear clothes.

Comparing womens’ bodies to meat, does more to objectify women, or commodify women than it does to convince anyone to give up meat. It seems like all it would do is convince patriarchal meat-eaters to objectify women even more.

And yet, as a registered charity, what PETA does is tax-deductible. What they do is being subsidised by the tax payers, every publicity stunt, every naked woman, every dead dog, it seems from my perspective, that it is all about how much money PETA can make. And if I am wrong, I will be prepared to stand corrected.

While large groups, such as PETA, ASPCA, HSUS, allegedly kill almost 10 million animals a year, smaller groups do much better with a lot less money, but they don’t get the media.


What can someone say other than to quote Penn & Teller… Bullshit PETA

Attacking PETA though, feels a little strange, I mean, how often do Animal Rights Activists say we need to stop the infighting. On the other hand, I can’t just support someone because they say they are for animals, when clearly they are not. And, they do have some useful resources and by that I mean ‘free’, which does help some people, but there comes a point when they are not just merely getting in the way of real vegans and AR people, but they are doing more damage than good.

And no one should have to unquestioningly support a pseudo-Animal Rights group, just because they say they are for animals.

Vegan Disaster Planning (plus food ideas)

There have been some disasters and emergency situations in the media recently, between the earthquakes in New Zealand and floods in Victoria, Australia, as well as around the world, bushfires in Russia and floods in Pakistan, that have inundated much of that country, and before that earthquake in Haiti, storms in the Gulf coast of America… I thought I would look at the Disaster planning, especially in terms of being vegan.

Having been evacuated twice in recent years during bushfires, this is every day reality, and not build-a-bunker, form-a-militia survivalism, just things to consider during emergencies. Also useful information for road-trips, camping, and electricity black-outs.

And, one more useful (non-vegan) tip, if you are evacuated – take the door keys so you can get back in.

Standard Emergency Planning /  Disaster Kits

* USA Government FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) (204page booklet)

* Red Cross Disaster Supplies Kit (has a good section on pets, page4)

* Emergency Management NSW: Pets and Livestock

* Emergency Management NSW: Emergency kit

While much of the information covered by the standard “disaster kits” can apply equally to vegans or omnivores, there are some things to consider for vegans, apart from all the information listed in the official guides

work gloves: especially if for work outside the house, such as clearing fallen trees, or home repairs, suggestions are often for “leather gloves”

first aid kits: may contain OTC (over the counter) medications and treatments that have been tested on animals or from companies that test on animals

blankets: may be woolen blankets, prepare with non-wool alternatives

fishing kits: often a staple of disaster kits are useless in a vegan emergency

candles and matches: some candles are made out of tallow and matches are made from animal products

personal care and hygiene products: may contain animal products, be tested on animals, or come from companies that test on animals

animals: food, water, medication, all animals need a carrier, shelters may not take animals (when moving animals in a vehicle the key points to remember are keep them warm, dark and quiet)

flash drive, computer back-up: vegans that own blogs or social network sites, be prepared to hand over to someone else, and store your graphics and files that may have taken many years to collect. Include copies of log ins that might be saved on a computer or have auto-log in. Store in a water-proof container.

food should also last without refrigeration, be prepared with minimal or no cooking and be portable

  • Canned fruit in juice, that can be eaten in one meal, there might not be options for storing left overs, and juice provides extra fluid
  • Canned beans
  • Grain/dried fruit bars (such as muesli or power bars) are now available with vegan selections

  • plained Rolled oats or Muesli mix, made with fruit and nuts; does not require cooking, add long-life soy milk
  • Crackers, Corn chips or crisps chips, extra salt may make require extra water
  • Canned corn, Canned baby potatoes or other Vegetables
  • Canned spaghetti, check for ingredients
  • UHT (ultra heat treated, long life) soy milk, plain or flavoured
  • Peanut butter, nut butter
  • Fruit jam, in small jars (short shelf life if unrefrigerated)
  • Vegan chocolate
  • Biscuits, Cookies
  • Seasonings, (jar or tin) powdered stock, pepper, chilli, soy sauce
  • Single serves mustard, chilli sauce, tomato sauce, peanut-butter (eg, find a friend in catering or hospitality industry)
  • Cocoa (pre mix with dry sweetener), Tea, Herbal Tea, Coffee
  • plus, Water

Animal Liberation Carrot Cake (plus vegan recipe)

This cake was based completely on a recipe found in NOW VEGAN: Fresh And Healthy (2008) by Animal Liberation NSW‘s Lynda Stoner. Stoner, went undercover for Animal Liberation to expose the brutality of the NSW (New South Wales) Government approved pig-dogging, described here – Lynda Stoner: Going undercover to reveal the bloody truths of pig dogging

Commercial, store-bought carrot cakes are loaded with additives. With home-cooking you can see every ingredient that goes into it, and you get to choose what additives you consume.




Carrot Cake with Passionfruit Icing

The Carrot Cake
1 cup plain wholemeal flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or Allspice)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

1/2 cup oil (example: macadamia, sunflower, light olive)
440 gram tin crushed pineapple, well drained
1 cup grated carrot

Preheat oven to 170°C fan-forced (180°C non fanforced/ 356°F).

Mix all the dry ingredients together: flour, spices, bicarb, baking powder, sugar, walnuts. Making sure it is well mixed.

Add the oil, pineapple and carrot, mix well.

Pour into a greased and line baking tin.

Baking for 35-40 minutes or until a wooden toothpick comes out clean.


Passionfruit Icing
Combine vegan margarine, powdered sugar, a little cornflour and lemon juice, til it reaches pouring/spreading consistency. Add sugar and lemon juice to taste.

Top with the seeds and juice of a passionfruit

Meat Kills

The driving force behind the destruction of the tropical rain forests is the American meat habit. The rain forests are cleared then planted with grass for grazing livestock to create hamburger for fast food restaurants.

More than half of all the water used in the United States is used for raising animals for food. 25 gallons of water is needed to produce a pound of wheat. 2500 gallons of water is needed to produce a pound of meat.

Dependence on foreign oil is one of the principle reasons for US intervention in the Persian Gulf. The length of time the world’s oil reserves would last if all human beings ate a meat-based diet would be approximately 13 years. The length of time the world’s oil reserves would last if all human beings ate a plant based diet would be approximately 260 years.

Feedlots and slaughterhouses are both major polluters of rivers and streams. Filling them with poisonous residues and animal wastes. 250,000 pounds of animal excrement is produced every second in the US and there are no sewage systems to treat the wastes.

In 1989, over 40% of the world’s grain harvest was fed to animals going to slaughter. If the same grain was fed directly to human beings, there would be more than enough grain to feed the entire world. Over 20 million people will die as a result of malnutrition this year.

In third third world private and government money has gone to developing cash crops for export while food production for the poor majority is neglected. 80% of the corn grown in the US is fed to animals raised for food rather than going to hungry people.

On a purely vegetarian diet the world can support a population many times its present size. On a meat based diet the current world population could not be sustained.

Cattle ranching has always competed with wildlife. Coyotes and wolves would not be shot and poisoned by ranchers if people did not eat steaks and lamb chops. Destroying the rain forests to raise cattle is causing millions of birds, monkeys, snakes and other species to lose their homes and lives.

In the US this year alone thirty seven and a half million cattle, eighty five and a half million
pigs, five and a half million sheep, two hundred forty two million turkeys, four billion one hundred forty seven million chickens will be murdered for the taste of their flesh.

Pain, frustration, stress, fear, abuse, neglect, and deprivation are realities of the raising of animals in today’s factory farms. Animals are artificially inseminated, fed growth hormones, overcrowded, chained and caged.

Raising livestock for profit is a competitive business and being humane means costs will go up. These animals are kicked, prodded, electro-shocked, dragged, and finally transported to their deaths.

A vegetarian diet promotes superior health, endurance, and longevity.

Animal products have 3 nutritional disadvantages. They contain too much protein, too much fat, and no fibre.

Do not believe the protein myth. It was based on a study done by the meat and dairy industries to rats, animals who need 1000 times more protein in their diet than humans.

Angelina Jolie close to death


Just how close to dying did Angelina Jolie really get?

Stories hit the media throughout the past week, that Angelina Jolie says she came close to death on a vegan diet. (A vegan diet is more correctly known as “strict vegetarian”)

Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie has blamed her vegan diet for “nearly killing” her, saying that she loves to eat red meat.

The Salt star says that when she restricted her diet to not include any animal products, it had negative effects on her health, reported Contactmusic.

“I joke that a big juicy steak is my beauty secret. But seriously, I love red meat. I was a vegan for a long time, and it nearly killed me. I found I was not getting enough nutrition,” said Jolie.

Jolie, pictured here, has never been one of the celebrities often quoted in lists of vegan celebs, so her admission that she was a vegan for a long time strikes actual vegans I speak to as an interesting comment.

She also clearly was NOT a vegan, but following a vegan diet (strict vegetarian) and her confusing the words shows how shallow her “veganism” really was.

And just how unhealthy is a vegan diet? Maybe Dr Ruth Heinrich would know. She is a
Vegan Triathlete who has run 67 marathons. And while it is possible that living the life of one of the highest paid actresses in the world may be tough, it’s hard to know just how tough compared to 67 marathons.

Yes, it does take a little thought into what you eat on a vegan diet in order to meet your nutritional needs, just as you would on a meat-and-dairy based diet. In fact it would be easier to meet your nutritional needs as a vegan, as long as you eat enough calories in a day.

What would be difficult is trying to meet your nutritional requirements on a diet that is high in saturated fat and low in fibre, calcium and iron on an animal-product diet.

If Jolie is accurate in what she says that she was “not getting enough nutrition” that would indicate someone who is not getting enough calories or getting enough Food!

In fact, as Amanda Benham (Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts (Murdoch), Grad Dip Human Nutrition (Deakin), Grad Dip Nutrition & Dietetics (QUT), Master of Health Science (QUT), Dip Journalism (ACJ), Member of the Dietitians Association of Australia, DAA appointed expert on vegetarian nutrition, Accredited Practising Dietitian, Accredited Nutritionist
dietitian-nutritionist specialising in vegetarian and vegan nutrition, points out:

As far as nutritionally, people often think protein is a big issue. Protein is not a really big issue but instead of meat, people need to eat things like legumes, which is like your lentils and beans and things like that. Or there’s lots of different meat substitutes made now. Soy products like tofu and TVP are really good. And nuts are good too. So they’re all good sources of not only protein but iron and zinc, which often people think you can only get from meat.
… There is quite a bit of calcium in grains, also in almonds, and in soy products. So calcium isn’t exclusive to dairy products So finding other sources of calcium is a good idea.
… There’s no evidence that vegetarians have problems with either iron or protein. Vegetarians need to be more aware of vitamin B12. They do need to supplement with that or have fortified foods that have vitamin B12 added. And, vitamin D, which we can get from the sun, but if someone’s not getting out in the sun much, they need to be careful of vitamin D as well.

So maybe it was not the vegan diet that tried to kill Angelina, but her own lack of awareness of what she was eating and nutritional laziness to eat a well-balanced meal.
